What's new for manufacturers in Production Reporting
Production reporting encompasses a variety of applications. It can involve efficiency reporting (OEE, or overall equipment effectiveness), raw materials tracking, job tracking, job costing, scheduling, defect tracking, statistical quality control, statistical process control, downtime reporting, scrap reporting and more.
Manufacturing software has come a long way over the past few years. Highly configurable systems are outpacing canned systems and providing a path for innovation.
Manufacturing software which can be configured to suit the customer's needs in a short time frame at reasonable cost is within reach.
One of the more expert applications is Advanced Planning. This consists of production scheduling with artificial intelligence capabilities designed to optimize the schedule based on your goal set. Examples for optimization include: changeover optimization, customer delivery deadlines, labor load leveling, shipping/logistics optimization, overtime reduction, raw materials availability, sales forecasts, finished goods/just in time/wip and inventory management.
Another expert production reporting system is Material Requirements Planning. Typically, this type of software interconnects a raw materials inventory, purchasing module, production schedule and sales forecast in order to predict your future raw materials requirements. They can often be integrated with purchasing to automatically generate purchase orders.
A new expert production reporting application, closed loop production software, retrieves the best historical runs of a product/workcenter combination. The "best runs" are mined from shop floor reporting systems using configurable filters such as high efficiency, high quality, low scrap, high profit. Once the best runs have been isolated, the software brings back the corresponding production and process settings that made the good runs possible. This application is an innovative tool for process and manufacturing engineers to establish best practices. In some cases, the system can be extended into a system that actually builds process recipes for automation on the fly.
All of these production reporting applications allow manufacturing facilities to extract the information they need from the factory floor to optimize production and quality in a timely way.
